“We played [the Rebels] six or five times this year and they’re a tough opponent that creates a lot of offence,” Boychuk said. “We need to be ready for that, because they’ve been playing really good hockey. It should be a really good battle.”

“It is good to see the athletes doing well and making improvements where they want to. It’s great for socializing, and gaining the types of things most people do in terms of sports.”

Airdrie-raised university athlete Jinaye Shomachuk chucked her way to a national gold medal at the U Sports national championship in Saskatoon this past weekend.

The Mustangs qualified as the zone's wild card entry for provincials thanks to a narrow two-point victory over the Cochrane Cobras last Friday, after earlier wins over Bow Valley High School and Brooks Composite High School. 

Coach Mark Pendergast said competing at provincials was a valuable learning experience for the girls.

A young Airdrie swimmer made a splash at the recent Swim Alberta provincial championships, nabbing two podium placements – including a gold medal. Ava Phillips is a 12-year-old member of the Airdrie Phoenix Swim Club.

“It is probably one of the most electric events you will see,” Pruden promised.

“We’re making history for our school, and it feels really great to be a part of what we’re doing this year.”

The International Taekwon-do Federation (ITF) Alberta Provincial Championships took place at the Genesis Place Fieldhouse this past weekend. Hundreds of fighters competed for honour, prestige and to test their skills.

The Xtreme set the tone for the series early in their Thursday night encounter, scoring all three of their goals in the opening three minutes.
