More than a dozen community organizations in Rocky View County (RVC) received an early Christmas present this year, in the form of Community Recreation Funding Grants doled out by RVC in December.

At its Dec. 22 regular meeting, RVC council approved more than $21,000 in capital and operating funding requests. The approved grants came three weeks after the County’s Recreation Governance Committee awarded just under $224,000 to various groups on Dec. 1.

Community groups that received grants included the Bearspaw Glendale Community Association, which received $75,660, the Bow Valley Community Club, which received $39,750 and the Beaupre Community Association, which was allocated $14,890.

Sporting clubs also got in on the action – the Madden Curling Club received $17,410, Cochrane Minor Baseball was approved $1,500 to go toward purchasing a batting cage, portable pitching mound and storage shed, and Beiseker Minor Hockey received $11,000. The Springbank Equestrian Society, on the west outskirts of the county, was awarded $2,930.

According to RVC council’s agenda package, Beiseker Minor Hockey’s funds will provide each of the association’s six teams with seven player skill training sessions and pay for refereeing fees, once team sports are allowed to resume.

Groups catering to the arts that received funding included the Langdon Theatre Association, which was allocated $6,250 and the Kiyooka Ohe Arts Centre in Springbank, which was granted $33,106.

Other recipients included Camp Chestermere – $6,000 to go toward snow removal – and the Extreme Cowboy Alberta Association and Mountain View Cowpoke Junior Rodeo Club, which each received $2,500. According to the agenda package, the Extreme Cowboy Alberta Association’s grant will go toward repairs and improvements for Ranchlands Horse Park in Cochrane. The club plans to install media stands and a storage facility, and also purchase a generator.
