According to Calgary media reports, a Cochrane resident, Craig Campbell, has a Doberman named Night to thank for saving him from a potential grizzly attack on a hiking trail off of Horse Creek Road, just northwest of the town, on May 2.

Campbell said he came upon a grizzly sow with two cubs while walking. The bear became aggressive and Campbell could not get to his bear spray on time.

Thankfully Night was there to save the day.

“There’s no question in my mind the Doberman gave the bear pause, the bear figured ‘this is not a good situation,'” Campbell reportedly told the Calgary Herald.

While grizzly bears are not so common near Cochrane, there have been more sightings in recent years, and even two fatal attacks northwest of Cochrane back in 2021. Both those incidents involved grizzly sows with cubs.

Bear experts warn residents hiking on local trails to be bear aware at all times, and take all necessary precautions as many sows with cubs are out and about at this time of year.
