Cochrane RCMP arrest one on impaired driving charges during National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day, Dec. 7.

"I am hopeful that impaired driving is on the decline in our community," said Staff Sgt. Dave Brunner, acting detachment commander in a Dec. 8 press release. "However, even one incident of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is too many. We will continue our efforts toward education, prevention and enforcement for as long as necessary until impaired driving stops."

National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day is a nationwide RCMP initiative to combat impaired driving in Canada. Cochrane RCMP conducted several Checkstops at different locations in and around the Cochrane area, according to the release, and estimate more than 200 vehicles were stopped.

"Impaired driving is a problem that continues to impact Canadians every day," Brunner said in lead up to the Checkstops. "We are committed to doing everything we can to ensure our roads are safe for all travellers.

"Impaired driving – whether the driver is impaired by alcohol, drugs, or extreme fatigue – is never OK. There is always another option. Please plan ahead, make good choices and celebrate safely this holiday season.”
