A teen from Airdrie was struck as he crossed East Lake Boulevard in a pedestrian crosswalk near Genesis Place Recreation Centre at approximately 7:20 a.m. on Jan. 23, according to RCMP Media Liaison Constable Jason Curtis.
Curtis said the youth, whose age he did not know, activated the flashing pedestrian crossing lights and waited for traffic to clear before venturing out into the crosswalk. As he was crossing, a truck traveling southbound failed to stop for the youth, striking him.
According to Curtis, witnesses at the scene told officers that the driver of the truck, described as an elderly man, stopped further down East Lake Boulevard, exited his vehicle, looked around and got back in and drove off.
The youth received only minor injuries and received first aid from staff at Genesis Place, according to Curtis.
RCMP describe the vehicle, based on witness statements, as a newer model pick-up truck, either a Dodge Ram or a GMC Sierra and white or gray in colour.
Curtis said the driver is urged to turn himself in at the Municipal Police Building at 2 Highland Park N.E. He added, he is unsure at this time what charges may be laid in the incident.
Under the Alberta Traffic Safety Act, failing to stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk carries a $575 fine and four demerit points.
Curtis said the victim’s name could not be released because he is a minor.
