Village changes street naming policy

Beiseker council voted to change a policy that requires new streets in the village be named after past mayors, Sept. 9.

Beiseker council voted to change a policy that requires new streets in the village be named after past mayors, Sept. 9.

In a 3-2 decision council approved a request that two streets in the Grasslands of Beiseker development on the west side of town be named after the subdivision they are located in.

The change of policy only affects streets within the soon-to-be developed subdivision.

In a statement from the development company submitted to council, “The Grasslands of Beiseker would like to formally request the Village to consider the proposed street names in the subdivision, these are important to our development and we would greatly appreciate an adjustment to the street naming policy.”

Mayor of Beiseker Ray Courtman and Councillor Karne Ursu voted against the motion to change the street naming policy, which was based around past mayors of the Village or landowners.

Fire chief submits report

Fire Chief Bob Ursu from the Village of Beiseker’s Fire Department went before council to give his communications report.

Ursu said that the department had five calls throughout the month of August, which brings the yearly total to date to 30 calls.

“Of those three of them, we definitely saved lives at,” Ursu said.

The calls were not fire related, they were vehicle accidents the department attended.

Outstanding taxes

Village of Beiseker CAO Jo Lambert told council that 87 per cent of the Village’s taxes have been collected, with nearly $271,000 still outstanding.

Lambert explained the majority of residents with outstanding taxes are paying on a month-to-month basis.

The majority of the outstanding debt is expected to be collected by the end of this calendar year and that the amount collect this year is higher than years previous, according to Lambert.
