Rocky View Schools approves year three of Three Year Plan

Rocky View Schools (RVS) board of trustees unanimously approved year three of the 2011-2014 Three Year Plan on May 16.

Rocky View Schools (RVS) board of trustees unanimously approved year three of the 2011-2014 Three Year Plan on May 16.

The plan outlines RVS’ goals, outcomes, performance measure framework and strategies, and is based on the hopes and desires of more than 500 stakeholders.

“The Three Year Plan has been the foundation of RVS moving forwards in the education universe,” said Trustee Colleen Munro.

Year three remains relatively the same as the first two years with outcomes and former goals remaining the same including having learners individual needs met, creating self-directed learners who are innovative, ecologically intelligent and entrepreneurial.

In addition, three goals have been added to the plan:

• Identify and engage school-based Universal Learning Coaches in the Universal Learning Environment professional learning plan, and initiate student-centric operational plan among all high schools

• Develop an information repository around 21st Century Competencies and accompanying continuum

• Increase accountability for the implementation of Policy HK Assessment and Communication of Student Learning and its procedures to better inform stakeholders of student learning, progress and performance

“We want to move forward and this is what our plan does for us,” said Trustee Sylvia Eggerer.

Online school

The Rocky View Learning Connection, a RVS outreach program that serves as an alternative placement for students with academic or personal challenges who are working towards a high school diploma, is to become an online school of its own. The new school will be called RVS Online and administrative staff hopes it will be in place by the fall. The school will not require RVS to hire a new principal or teaching staff as the certified teachers from the Learning Connection will continue to support students with RVS Online, and the principal of the new Airdrie high school Todd Kiernan will also provide the principal role for RVS Online.

School board election

The 2013 School Board election will be held on Oct. 21.

At this time no candidates have come forward but Board Chair Bruce Pettigrew said he will not be seeking re-election.

“It’s been 42 years in education for me,” Pettigrew said.

He added he wanted to allow other people in Cochrane to engage in the community and give other candidates a chance to “take the plunge.”

He said he will remain in Cochrane, the community he loves, but might take some time to travel.

Trustee Helen Clease said she is strongly considering re-election, Trustee Bev LePeare and Trustee Norma Lang have confirmed they will run for re-election. Trustee Don Thomas and Trustee Sylvia Eggerer said they are undecided if they will run. Trustee Colleen Munro could not be reached before press time.
