Rocky View County council approved a $250,000 grant for Chestermere’s regional recreation complex, pending matching funding from the Town of Chestermere.

During a council meeting Jan. 9, Dari Lang, recreation services coordinator for the County, presented a report to council on funding for the complex.

The report detailed partnership funding was approved as far back as 2010.

In 2010, Chestermere and Rocky View County councils agreed to fund $300,000 for the Chestermere Regional Community Association to help with enhancements to the second floor of the facility. However, that money was pulled by both councils after it was brought to light as plans developed that the costs for the project would be higher than anticipated.

Rocky View County reallocated $50,000 of the original funding to help the association complete a life-cycle replacement plan and business plan which was completed last June.

Last June, the plan was completed and outlined work needed to be done for the recreation complex. Necessary work includes architectural upgrades, in the kitchen and ice plant rooms; electrical work on the fire alarm system and electrical panel; mechanical work, such as unit heaters in the curling rink and heaters in the arena; as well as refrigeration work including a $60,000 condenser replacement.

The $250,000 funding will cover 45 per cent of the expected total.

Lang said construction is scheduled to begin this June. She said there needs to be a consensus with all parties involved that they can afford to fund the project.

The funding was approved unanimously.
