Rocky View County council approves speed reduction

Rocky View County council approved Glenbow Provincial Park’s application to reduce the speed limit along Glenbow Road, south of Cochrane, to 50 km/h, June 18.

Rocky View County council approved Glenbow Provincial Park’s application to reduce the speed limit along Glenbow Road, south of Cochrane, to 50 km/h, June 18.

The road, about three kilometres, leads south off of Highway 1A to the Glenbow Provincial Park entrance and is mainly a downhill, rolling terrain.

Glenbow Provincial Park officials requested a reduction from 80 km/h stating the road has too many hills and curves for the current speed limit.

According to Rocky View County administration reports, there have been no accidents on the road within the last five years, but about 200 vehicles use the road each day.

Administration posted a survey on the County website prompting the public to give feedback on the proposed 50 km/h speed limit.

The application received full support from the four residential properties and 12 field approaches that enter off of Glenbow Road.

“I think this road warrants that speed reduction and I’ll support that,” said Deputy Reeve Paul McLean.

Playground zone

Council also approved a request by a resident of Langdon to implement a Playground Zone along Boulder Creek Way and Boulder Creek Green west of Boulder Creek Drive in Langdon and reduce the speed limit to 30 km/h.

Because the zone is located across from a park, local residents expressed safety concerns with the current 40 km/h limit given the high volume of traffic that uses the two roads.

According to administration reports, more than 380 vehicles travel along Boulder Creek Way and about 180 along Boulder Creek Green every day.

There have been no accidents involving motorists or pedestrians in the area.

Another resident, Aimee Szarka, president of the Langdon Residents on Patrol, said later that speeding within the hamlet is an ongoing issue.

“All our speed zones are of concern. Our community is full of young people. And the thing is most of our roads don’t have sidewalks so people are out walking their dogs and biking along the side of the road,” she said.

Council unanimously approved the speed reduction. Playground zone signage will be posted along Boulder Creek Way and Boulder Creek Green.

“This proposal is entirely appropriate and most people adhere to that speed anyways so it’s a matter of posting the signage,” said Reeve Rolly Ashdown in council.
