A tree farm west of the Hamlet of Delacour will now be home to goats as well.

Council approved the redesignation of a 50-acre parcel from 150 acres of land located 3.8-kilometres northeast of Delacour and just less than a kilometre north of Highway 564 and west of Range Road 274, Nov. 6.

Norman Kent, representing landowners and brothers, Boota Singh Jawanda and Surit Singh Jawanda said the two men purchased the land in 1992 and built their homes in 1998. He said farming is in their family history and they wish to start a goat farm. He said the parcel’s soil is well suited for the animals.

The family would continue to operate the tree farm on the remaining land.

A total of 250 goats are allowed on the 50 acres and all meat would be processed offsite at a plant.

“I always thought goat farming would be very profitable considering the clientele in Calgary and area,” said Councillor Lois Habberfield in support of the redesignation.

Council approved the request unanimously.

Land redesignationFarmstead approved

Council approved the redesignation of 18 acres of land from a quarter section located north of Cochrane Lakes to allow for a farmstead.

The redesignation is from ranch and farm to farmstead district. The remaining land will continued to be used as part of a ranching operation.

The parcel contains a 10-year-old home, equestrian riding arena and several small accessory buildings. The parcel is larger than the four acres preferred by the County for a farmstead. Because the larger size is needed for the riding arena and to avoid irregular configurations, administration recommended the redesignation.

Council approved the request unanimously.

Kathyrn redesignation

Council approved redesignation of a four-acre parcel of land from a quarter section north of the Hamlet of Kathyrn and west of Range Road 272 from ranch and farm to residential two district.

There is currently no development on the site. The new parcel will be on the southeast corner of the quarter section and will be serviced by a new water well and sewage treatment system.

Patricia Maloney, the applicant, told council the land is currently used for cattle and as a feedlot. She said the parcel will allow the farmer to live on the land and be in close proximity to where the applicant works. The applicant would work on the surrounding land.
