Rocky View council rejects Crossfield library funding

County council rejected a Town of Crossfield request for $187,500 to support construction of a library in the community.

County council rejected a Town of Crossfield request for $187,500 to support construction of a library in the community.

The library was to be separate from the Marigold Library System, a province-wide network of public libraries, to which Rocky pays an annual membership fee of $285,600.

ìIím a big fan of libraries in all communities,î said Councillor Lois Habberfield.

ìHowever, I think we have a lot more strength if we work together.î

If the library was to be a Marigold member, the decision would likely be different, Habberfield added.

Gravel operators will now have to prepare a Master Site Development Plan (MSDP) when applying for land redesignation.

Council voted unanimously to require an MSDP, with a fee of $1,000, be submitted along with all supporting technical documentation and reports during rezoning hearings.

The MSDP will include a general introduction to the proposed development, a description of the proposal including haul routes, proposed hours of operation, a phasing and reclamation plan and impacts to surrounding lands and mitigation strategies.

It will also include a technical summary of the development including a proposed stormwater management plan, environmental overview, noise and dust mitigation strategies and a traffic impact assessment.

The document will also require a summary of community consultation and results.

Three large-scale businesses are looking to locate in the East Balzac area.

Furniture stores Leonís, La-Z-Boy and energy company Shell have announced their intent to buy lots close to CrossIron Mills mall at the intersection of CrossIron Boulevard and CrossIron Drive. The businesses will get their water from the East Balzac Water Distribution System. Sewage will be taken care of by the East Rocky View Wastewater Transmission line.

Council unanimously approved rezoning and subdivision applications to enable a 3.7-acre expansion of the Crossfield cemetery.

The proposed parcel, just south of the two existing plots, was donated to the Town of Crossfield by the Beddoes family.

The new parcel doesnít require water and sewage services and stormwater management is not needed as little extra runoff is expected to be generated.

ìIt is another example of regional cooperation,î said Councillor Greg Boehlke. ìIt does serve Rocky View residents and will continue to in the future.î
