A Cochrane resident reported the theft of his unloaded .357 revolver handgun from his vehicle to RCMP Aug. 14 and has been charged with unsafe storage of a firearm, according to Media Liaison Constable Jennifer Brewer.

“The male who owned the handgun, as soon as he noticed his vehicle had been entered went out and checked and found (the handgun) was missing,” she said. “He came directly into the detachment (to report the theft).”

Brewer said the 53-year-old’s vehicle was left unlocked outside his residence on Bow Ridge Road.

“He had originally locked it, however, a family member had gone out and left it unlocked when they came back inside,” she said.

Twenty-five rounds of ammunition were also stolen from the centre console of the vehicle.

Brewer said the incident is a good reminder to people to make sure to store and transport firearms safely and correctly.

“We always want to remember to have (a gun) stored properly, to not leave it unattended,” she said. “If you do have to transport it, (the firearm) should go from point A to point B and is stored properly. We want to avoid the accidental discharge of a firearm.”

A second man has been arrested and charged with the Aug. 7 murder of Kori Wesley, 21, on the Stoney Nakoda First Nation, according to Alberta RCMP Spokesperson Corporal Laural Scott.

A 17-year-old youth, who cannot be named because of his age, was arrested Aug. 11 without incident in Red Deer by Red Deer RCMP.

Tylen Tray Poucette, 20, of the Stoney Nakoda First Nation was charged Aug. 7 with the second-degree murder of Wesley.

Wesley’s body was found near the Chiniki Rodeo Grounds at approximately 3:20 p.m. Aug. 7, according to Scott.

The youth is being held in police custody pending the outcome of a judicial interim release hearing.

Poucette appeared in Cochrane Provincial Court Aug. 16. His request for bail was denied and he was ordered to stay in custody. He will next appear in court on Sept. 13.

A driver pulled over for speeding Aug. 14 by a Cochrane Peace Officer has also been charged with impaired driving after an investigation by Cochrane RCMP, according to Brewer.

“We aren’t divulging (how much over the legal limit he was),” she said. “Once this goes to court it becomes public knowledge but the information hasn’t been sworn yet.”

The 32-year-old man from Calgary – who can’t be named until the information is officially sworn – was initially pulled over for speeding at the corner of Nagway Court and Nagway Drive.

He has been charged with impaired driving as well as a number of Alberta Traffic Safety Act violations, including driving while suspended and driving an unregistered and uninsured motor vehicle.
