An Airdrie RCMP press release said officers are investigating a string of car thefts and attempted thefts in a number of locations on the city’s east side that occurred in the early morning hours of Aug. 26.

Airdrie RCMP Media Liaison Constable Jason Curtis said RCMP first responded to the Big Springs neighbourhood at 2:20 a.m. when a resident reported seeing a man and woman attempting to steal a blue and white pick-up truck with a slip tank in the back.

Officers surrounded the vehicle and asked the man and the woman, who was driving, to exit the truck.

They ignored the officers and drove off, narrowly missing an officer, according to RCMP.

A Ford F250 truck that was later determined to be stolen was found at the scene, and seized by RCMP, according to Curtis.

The license plates on a number of vehicles in the neighbourhood were also found to have been stolen.

At 5:05 a.m., Airdrie RCMP said officers responded to an alarm at Airdrie Towing and Logistics on East Lake Way.

When officers arrived they found the lock to the garage in the tow yard had been broken and a Ford F250 work truck had been stolen.

Curtis said the thieves drove the truck out through the security gate.

“As far as we can tell, they just pry-barred the door,” Curtis said.

The same night, RCMP were then called to the Meadowbrook neighbourhood after a witness reported seeing a residence being broken into.

“(While) the witness called police, a male and female suspect stole the vehicle he had been travelling in, that was parked nearby,” Curtis said.

“RCMP have not been able to locate the stolen 2013 black KIA Forte.”

Curtis said RCMP are not sure whether the man and woman in the first incident in Big Springs are the same as those involved in the car theft in Meadowbrook.

“We’re investigating all possibilities. We can’t specifically say at this time, but it is a lot of similar thefts in a very short amount of time,” he said.

“We are investigating but we can’t come forward and say ‘yes or no’ quite yet.”

Curtis said descriptions of the suspects are not available.

The Airdrie General Investigative Section and Crime Reduction Unit as well as general duty officers continue to investigate.

“It was a strange night, because it was the same night as the armed robbery (at the Mac’s convenience store on Summerfield Boulevard) as well,” he added.

“It was a busy night and we don’t normally see that type of volume, although you can’t predict human behaviour. That is a lot of calls for a short amount of time.”
