Airdrie Integrated Traffic Unit officers laid 268 charges over the Easter long weekend.
Speeding accounted for 65 per cent of the violations, while child and adult seat belts infractions, distracted driving, intersections????? violations and impaired drivers adding to the total.
Last year, officers laid 274 charges over the same weekend.
On March 28, an officer charged a 36-year-old Airdrie woman with impaired driving after determining her blood alcohol content was allegedly 2.5 times the legal limit. An officer observed the woman, driving a Nissan Murano, failing to stop at a stop sign and followed the vehicle as it merged onto Highway 2 southbound at Highway 566. The vehicle accelerated to 130 kilometres per hour (km/h) before the officer stopped the driver at around 11 p.m.
An Airdrie officer clocked a small Mercedes car travelling south on Highway 2 near Crossfield at 173 km/h.
Police charged a 42-year-old Calgary driver with speeding. The incident took place at around 11:30 p.m. on March 29.
Police charged a 34-year-old Calgary man with speeding after police spotted a red Ford Edge travelling westbound on Highway 9 near Highway 21 at 156 km/h, at around 5 p.m., March 31.
