RCMP said no one was seriously injured after a two-car collision at the intersection of Sierra Springs Drive and Yankee Valley Boulevard on Sept. 2 at 2 p.m.

The passenger in a silver Hyundai car, a 53-year-old woman, was taken to hospital by ground ambulance as a precaution with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Constable Darrin Turnbull of the Airdrie detachment. The car was driven by the woman’s daughter, 26.

The driver of the other vehicle involved in the collision, a silver Toyota minivan, was a 79-year-old woman, according to Turnbull.

It was not known as of press time if any of those involved in the crash were from Airdrie at press time.

According to RCMP, the Hyundai was travelling westbound on Yankee Valley Blvd and attempted to turn southbound onto Sierra Springs Drive when it was struck by the minivan that was eastbound on Yankee Valley Blvd.

Turnbull said RCMP is continuing to investigate the exact cause of the collision and was not able to confirm if charges against the drivers were pending.

“It is a busy intersection with a lot of traffic that goes through it,” Turnbull said.

“You’ve got six lanes; three in each direction and you have the intersection with (people) coming on and off the highway.”

“When people are obeying the traffic lights at that intersection, there’s no problems. We need drivers to be more (attentive) to the traffic signals that are there. Pay attention to your driving; don’t be distracted and don’t race the lights. You need to make sure you have enough time to make a left turn.”

Turnbull said drivers will need to be particularly diligent with summer over and wet weather on the horizon.

“Now we’re coming into the fall we’re going to have rain and poor driving conditions,” Turnbull said.

Stolen Car

RCMP is asking for the public’s help to identify two men who allegedly stole a Mercedes two-seater coupe in Red Deer before stopping in Airdrie at the Shell Station on Edmonton Trail to fill up on Aug. 19.

According to RCMP, the two suspects were seen pulling into the Shell station in the black Mercedes at 3:15 p.m. One of the men got out of the vehicle and began filling the car with fuel.

Constable Jason Curtis of the Airdrie RCMP said a store clerk went out to talk to the man.

“The clerk was coming out to speak with (the suspect) because he noticed the male hadn’t made any attempt to pre-pay,” Curtis explained.

“I think, unfortunately, that business has been hit a couple of times before.”

According to Curtis, there was no confrontation between the clerk and the suspect.

“The male just put the pump away, jumped in the vehicle and off they went,” Curtis said.

The clerk was able to get the license plate number of the vehicle and phoned RCMP. The amount of fuel the suspects were able to get away with is not being disclosed by RCMP, according to Curtis.

Curtis said after running the plate, officers discovered the vehicle had been reported stolen in Red Deer.

A “be on the lookout” notice was issued and the Mercedes was located, abandoned, in Innisfail a short time later.

A member of the RCMP Forensic Identification Services collected evidence from the vehicle once it was recovered, according to Curtis.

“What specifically (was recovered), I don’t know,” Curtis said. “(Possibly) some fingerprints, food wrappers, that sort of thing.”

Surveillance video from the Shell station shows only the suspect that got out of the vehicle.

He is described as Caucasian, in his mid-20s, with blonde hair, approximately six-feet tall with an average to slender build. He was wearing a white muscle shirt and black pants with blue shoes. A photo of the suspect can be viewed on airdriecityview.com

Curtis said Red Deer City RCMP and Innisfail RCMP have been assisting with the investigation.

If you have any information on any crime, call your local RCMP detachment or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
