An Innisfail man put over his election and plea for the eighth time when he appeared before Airdrie Court on Jan. 10.
The man, who isn’t being named due to a publication ban protecting the identity of the victim, is facing 15 charges including break and enter with intent, forcible confinement, choking to overcome resistance, assault, assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest.
The charges follow an alleged incident at the CrossIron Mills mall on March 28, 2012.
According to a RCMP press release, the victim was abducted from her home and taken to the shopping centre where she passed a note to a Good Samaritan in the washroom.
The note asked the Good Samaritan to call 911 as she had been abducted and assaulted.
The note was handed over to mall security who contacted the police and located the victim and suspect and took them to the security office.
The press release explains two plainclothes officers were nearby and responded immediately.
The police officers identified themselves to the victim but the suspect became angry and assaulted the woman in front of police. When the police tried to arrest the man, he resisted and fought with them before he was eventually handcuffed.
The man is due back in court on Jan. 31 for election and plea. Election is when an accused individual chooses whether he wants to be tried in provincial court by a judge, or in the Court of Queen’s Bench with a judge and jury or with a judge alone.
The accused remains in custody.
