A 31-year-old off duty Calgary Police Services (CPS) member was seriously injured, Dec. 12, when the Jeep Wrangler he was driving was hit head-on by a man driving the wrong way on Highway 2 at Highway 566.

The collision took place at approximately 1 a.m. Airdrie RCMP received two 911 calls from motorists reporting they had seen a Ford Taurus traveling southbound in the northbound lane, according to Airdrie RCMP Media Liaison Constable Francine Hennelly. RCMP was not able to intercept the vehicle before the collision occurred.

“The investigation is ongoing. There were no other people in either vehicle at the time of the collision,” Hennelly said.

According to EMS Spokesman Adam Loria, the off-duty CPS member who is originally from Brandon, Man., was transported to the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary in serious but non life-threatening condition with soft tissue injuries.

The 31-year-old driver of the Ford Taurus from Airdrie was trapped in his vehicle initially and required extrication. He was transported to the Foothills in serious, potentially life-threatening condition.

“The gentleman who was not responsible for the collision was in stable condition as of 1 p.m. on Dec. 12,” Hennelly said. “The other man, at that time, was in serious condition.”

Hennelly said RCMP analysts have not ruled out impairment or weather and road conditions as being factors in the collision. No charges have been laid but are not being ruled out. The vehicles sustained considerable damages.
