A woman riding a motorcycle on Highway 9 just south of Highway 566 was killed July 24 when she collided with a SUV at approximately 4:20 p.m.

According to Airdrie Rural RCMP Constable Matt Gervais, the woman was riding southbound on Highway 9 when she crossed the centre line and collided with a northbound Dodge Durango.

“We don’t know why she crossed the centre line,” he said.

The name of the 47-year-old woman from Strathmore is not being released, according to Gervais.

“EMS responded shortly after 4 p.m.,” EMS Spokesman Chris Kalyn said.

“The motorcyclist was deceased on EMS arrival. The driver of the SUV was offered assessment by EMS but refused, and had minor injuries that were not treated by EMS.”

The collision occurred west of Kathyrn on Highway 9 at Range Road 272. RCMP from Beiseker and Airdrie attended along with EMS and the Airdrie Fire Department.

Both lanes of Highway 9 were closed for approximately four and a half hours while a collision analyst investigated the scene.

A 66-year-old man was seriously injured July 26 when he lost control of his motorcycle and collided with a cable barrier on Highway 2 north of Crossfield.

According to Gervais, the motorcyclist was traveling southbound at approximately 2 p.m. when he lost control and entered the centre median before striking the cable barrier.

“It’s still under investigation as to how he entered the ditch,” Gervais said.

“There were no other vehicles involved.”

STARS Air Ambulance was called to the scene and transported the man to Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary in serious but stable condition.

“He sustained some upper torso injuries and possible head injuries,” Kalyn said.

According to Kalyn, there were no other vehicles involved in the collision and no other injuries.

Gervais said traffic on Highway 2 southbound was rerouted for approximately half an hour to allow STARS to land and emergency crews to work. Southbound Highway 2 was then reduced to two lanes for an additional hour while investigators were on scene.

Three people were taken to hospital in Calgary July 27 after a two-vehicle collision on Highway 564.

According to Gervais, the collision occurred one kilometer east of Stoney Trail at the intersection of 84 Street. A Toyota Corolla travelling westbound on Highway 564 was struck from behind by a Dodge Ram pickup truck at approximately 10:30 a.m.

A 17-year-old female passenger in the Corolla was transported to Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary, according to EMS Spokesman Adam Loria.

“The most seriously injured was transported in serious, potentially life-threatening condition,” he said.

“Two others – females in their teens – were also transported to Foothills in stable condition with minor injuries.”

The three occupants of the pickup truck sustained no injuries, according to Loria.

According to Gervais, the investigation is in the early stages.

“Charges are pending based on the investigation. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor. Speed is not believed to be a factor at this time but that’s all still under investigation,” he said.

Motorists on Highway 564 were detoured briefly and traffic was disrupted for several hours, according to Gervais.

“Then Rocky View Fire opened up the eastbound lane to alternating traffic,” he said.

“It was only shut for a very short time while the initial response was there and EMS and fire were attempting to extricate the one passenger.”

Airdrie Rural RCMP would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the collision. Witnesses are asked to call 403-945-7200.
