Airdrie RCMP apprehended a 25-year-old man from Calgary after he fled the scene of a traffic stop on Highway 2 near CrossIron Mills mall on Sept. 12.

The Airdrie Integrated Traffic Unit (ITU) was conducting traffic enforcement on Highway 2 shortly after 7 a.m., when an ITU officer observed a man in a company van driving without a seatbelt.

The officer conducted a traffic stop and the driver was unable to produce a driver’s license and, according to RCMP, was evasive in his answers. The driver suddenly exited the vehicle and began to run on foot, east into an open field.

Members of the ITU and the Airdrie RCMP immediately set up containment and awaited the assistance of an RCMP Police Service dog. After tracking the man for a short time, he was located by the police dog and taken into custody without incident.

The driver recently received a driver disqualification for an impaired driving conviction; he now faces several charges including driving while disqualified, obstructing a peace officer and several other Traffic Safety Act related offenses.

His name will not be released until charges are formally laid which is expected in the coming weeks, he is scheduled to appear in Airdrie Provincial Court on Nov. 7.
