A 23-year-old man from Calgary is facing four counts under the Canadian Criminal Code after causing a head-on collision Oct. 31, which seriously injured two people.

Aaron Ernest Moore has been charged with two counts of failing to remain at the scene of an accident knowing bodily harm was caused and two counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm.

The collision occurred in the vicinity of Highway 1 and Vale View Road north of Langdon, at approximately 10 p.m., according to Strathmore RCMP Sergeant Steve Vince.

“A southbound pickup truck was passing a passenger car and drove head on into an oncoming pickup truck,” Vince said. “The at-fault driver fled the scene and, with the assistance of Calgary Police Services HAWCS helicopter and the RCMP Police Dog Services, the male was successfully located.”

Vince said investigators believe drug use may be a factor in the collision, which is ongoing. Speed is also being assessed as a factor.

The two occupants of the pickup that was hit by Moore were seriously injured, according to EMS Spokesman Adam Loria.

“One man, believed to be in his 40s, required extrication from the vehicle. (He was) assessed, stabilized on scene by ground and air paramedic crews and subsequently flown to the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary by STARS Air Ambulance,” Loria said.

“His condition at (the) time of the incident was considered non life-threatening, however, (he) was suffering from multiple, serious soft tissue injuries.”

According to Vince, the 42-year-old man from Calgary remains in hospital.

“His injuries were quite severe,” he said. “He has significant lower extremity damage.”

The man was travelling in the same vehicle with a 42-year-old woman from Calgary who also had to be extricated from the car. She was transported by ground ambulance to the Foothills, also with several serious soft tissue injuries, according to Loria.

Moore was transported to the Peter Lougheed Centre in Calgary with only minor injuries.

He will appear in Strathmore Provincial Court on Nov. 17 to answer charges.
