On Oct. 12 at about 1:15 p.m., Cochrane RCMP responded to an alarm at a local residence. The resident, who called police over a two-way alarm system, notified RCMP that she had caught someone trying to break into her home.

Upstairs at the time of the attempted break in, the female came downstairs to see what the noise was when she heard someone trying to enter through the back door of her home. Seeing a man at the door the woman called police, while the man fled northbound from the residence.

Cochrane RCMP and RCMP Police Dog Services searched for the man, but were unsuccessful in locating him.

He is described as a white male, about 30 to 35 years of age with black hair. He was wearing a black hat, jean jacket, black sweat pants and white running shoes.

Fatal accident

On Nov. 6 at 7 p.m., Airdrie rural RCMP responded to a two-vehicle collision on Highway 566 and Range Road 292.

The accident occurred between a small car and a pick-up truck, resulting in the death of the car’s adult male driver.

The driver of the truck was transported by ambulance to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Cochrane human remains

After a lengthy investigation, the Alberta Medical Examiner has determined the human remains found on a rural property near Cochrane on Oct. 13 are those of a white male between the ages of 18 and 30 years of age.

Though the cause of death is still unknown, the individual appears to have suffered a broken nose that healed prior to his death. It is also believed that the remains were at the location where they were found for less than a year.

Cochrane RCMP are hoping these newly released details will allow the public to assist in the investigation and fill in the blanks as to the cause and circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

As with any case where human remains are found, the death is being viewed as suspicious in nature.

The RCMP have set up a tip line at 403-699-2709 in Calgary for anyone who can provide information that may assist in the investigation.

Light airplane crash

On Nov. 4 at about 12:30 p.m., Strathmore RCMP were called out to a light airplane crash in a field near Indus.

Upon take off, the pilot of the single-engine plane determined the plane was suffering from engine problems that would require him to immediately land.

Unable to make it back to the Indus airfield, the pilot brought the plane down in an open field.

As the plane rolled along the ground, the nose dipped and sunk into the field resulting in the plane flipping over onto its top.

“Luckily no one was hurt in the accident,” said Strathmore RCMP Cst. Duane White. “When you hear of a plane crash you always think of something very disastrous, but fortunately in this case the pilot handled himself well and took the plane down as soon as he sensed there was a problem.”

Though fire and ambulance personnel were called out to the scene, the pilot and his passenger were examined and determined to have no injuries.

“There was quite a bit of damage to the aircraft overall,” noted White. “We have investigated the situation and have no reason to lay charges against the pilot for anything relating to this accident and we also have no reason to believe that alcohol was involved in any way.”

Collision

On Nov. 4 at 5:45 p.m., Beiseker RCMP responded to a collision between a motor vehicle and a pedestrian on Highway 21 between Carbon and Beiseker.

Police determined the victim’s 1995 Plymouth Voyager broke down in the southbound lane of Highway 21.

Upon exiting the stalled car, the victim walked across the roadway and was subsequently hit by an oncoming vehicle that was travelling northbound. The victim, who is identified as a 45-year-old man from Didsbury, was transported to Three Hills Hospital in critical condition. He later died in hospital as a result of his injuries.

The highway was closed for a brief period following the accident.

Charges are currently not being considered for the northbound driver.

“Police are investigating the possibility of the victim having consumed alcohol prior to this collision,” said Beiseker RCMP Cst. Francine Hennelly. “No adverse weather conditions were reported.”

Pedestrian hit and run

In the early morning hours of Nov.1, Strathmore RCMP were sent out to a residence near Conrich to investigate a complaint of threats being uttered.

Upon arrival a man was questioned and informed RCMP officers that he had been hit by a car and that the car did not stop after the collision.

He went on to explain that the driver of the car had been at the residence earlier in the evening and that there were a number of other men inside the residence who had threatened him.

Police arrested one man in connection with the hit and run, and another on outstanding warrants of arrest. Police also located a vehicle stuck in a ditch one kilometre from the residence and arrested a third man walking toward Calgary.

The vehicle was examined by Calgary RCMP Forensic Identification Services who were able to determine that the vehicle had been involved in a pedestrian hit and run.

One man has since been released with charges pending, stemming from the collision.
