The Langdon Field playground construction site was vandalized on May 24, according to Chrissy Craig of the Langdon Community Association (LCA).

“They did sink one piece (of equipment) a little bit, but not enough that we will have to replace it,” Craig said.

The piece that was damaged was the “spin-o-rama” section – a circular piece near the main portion that spins. The piece was sitting on concrete when it was pushed it.

According to Craig, the piece is still able to function safely and won’t need repairs.

The playground cost the Langdon Community Association (LCA) approximately $130,000. Repairs will cost around $500. The money and equipment comes through various donations and funds/grants through the provincial and municipal governments.

Craig also said most of the playground equipment was not damaged and will not have to be replaced.

A window was smashed on the bobcat used in the construction, part of the fence was damaged and a table with concrete footing was overturned.

“The equipment was donated,” Craig said.

“We still have to pay for the repairs on the equipment.”

The opening date of the playground will not be affected, as Craig said volunteers are determined to build and fix the playground by the beginning of June as scheduled.

Craig mentioned that they were finishing placing the gravel on Thursday and would be done soon after.

“We’re still going to have the opening on June 1,” Craig said.

“We’re determined to get it done.”

The playground opening will start at 4 p.m. and include a free family barbecue. A bouncy castle will also be available for children.

At 4:30 p.m., the playground will officially be unveiled. Chesteremere-Rocky View MLA Bruce McAllister will also speak at the event.

Craig said they plan on completing the playground by midweek in preparation of the opening.

Currently, Craig says there are no suspects for the vandalism.

“We have no leads,” Craig said.

“We’re asking anybody with any leads to report them to the Strathmore RCMP.”

RCMP were looking into the situation, however, the officer in charge was not available to comment by press time. Strathmore RCMP can be reached at 403-934-3968.
