Human remains identified as missing Calgary woman

The human remains found in a rural area near Strathmore in May have been identified as a Calgary woman who went missing over seven years ago.

Thirty-five-year-old Maria Rose Ciciolla went missing in July 2006 and was last seen at 19 Avenue and 44 Street SE in Calgary. She was known to engage in a high-risk lifestyle and was reported missing in November 2006, according to an RCMP press release.

On July 23, RCMP announced that the human remains found near Strathmore in May belonged to Ciciolla.

A landowner made the grizzly discovery of the skeletal remains while performing maintenance on his land near Range Road 275 and Township 232, May 13, and immediately contacted the RCMP.

The deceased’s family has been notified and the RCMP Serious Crime Branch along with Calgary Police are now investigating.

Anyone with information about Ciciolla’s activities leading up to her disappearance is asked to call their local police or Crime Stoppers at: 1-800-222-8477.

Fatal collision

A 48-year-old woman from Cremona, north of Cochrane, has died after being involved in a single-vehicle collision on Lochend Road, 10 kilometres north of Highway 1A in Rocky View County.

On July 21 at around 5:30 a.m., Cochrane RCMP along with Fire and EMS responded to the collision.

A Toyota Sienna mininvan was travelling northbound on Lochend Road when it entered the east ditch, causing the van to roll several times and come to rest on its roof.

Another motorist noticed the vehicle but did not see the collision occur. Details are still scarce at this time and Cochrane RCMP are looking for additional witnesses to come forward with any information.

Drug Seizure

Cochrane RCMP seized 300 pounds of marijuana and three pounds of ecstasy from an automobile on July 18 near Canmore.

A vehicle had been travelling east on Highway 1 near Canmore and was stopped for a traffic safety infraction.

The drugs are estimated to have a street value of $2 million.

Upon approaching the vehicle, the RCMP officer noticed a strong odour of raw marijuana coming from within the vehicle. The driver, who was the lone occupant of the van was arrested.

A search of the vehicle revealed the drugs and an extendable baton.

A 34-year-old man from Edmonton has been charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and one count of possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace.

The man was released on $3,000 bail and was scheduled to appear in Canmore Provincial Court on July 24.

Theft of trailer

On July 21 at about 3:28 p.m., Airdrie Rural and Beiseker RCMP were dispatched to a theft of a trailer from the Whispering Spruce Campground at Balzac. The theft is believed to have occurred some time over the past six days.

The camper trailer is described as 2007 Pilbrim Legend, is nine metres in length and has brownish red and dark green decals with mountains on the front and sides, along with the word “Legends” in large writing.
