A house being moved to a new location caused major delays on Highway 566 in Balzac on Feb. 17, according to Airdrie RCMP Media Liaison Constable Francine Hennelly.

“At approximately 4:10 p.m. on Feb. 17, a building mover transporting a house was attempting to cross the railway tracks at Highway 566. The house moving dolly caught on the tracks and at least seven tires and rims were damaged and required replacement,” she said.

“Commercial Vehicle Enforcement attended along with members from the RCMP. They did close down Highway 566 in both directions until after 9 a.m. on Feb. 18.”

A tire company was also at the scene to replace the tires and get the 40-foot wide house moving again.

Arena break-in

Cochrane RCMP is investigating a break and enter at the Stoney Tribal Hockey Arena on the afternoon of Feb. 6, according to Cochrane RCMP Sergeant Darleen White.

“They pried open the doors, turned on the lights and played hockey,” she said. “They didn’t do any damage and nothing was stolen.”

Nine adults with kids were caught on video surveillance entering the facility and playing hockey. The arena is located on the Stoney Nakoda First Nation.

“The arena does not want (RCMP) to look into it or charge anybody,” White said. “But it’s still illegal. They did have hockey sticks and hockey bags.”

Collision

Members from the Cochrane RCMP were called to assist Turner Valley RCMP with a collision on Highway 22 near the Priddis firehall Feb. 12 at 9:30 a.m., according to White.

“Initially it was a single-vehicle collision and EMS attended for that,” she said. “While EMS was there and treating two people from the rollover, the ambulance was struck by another car.”

Road conditions and weather are considered to be factors in the collisions.

“That was the day it was really foggy and the roads down there were fairly slippery from the fog. The only injuries were minor and from the initial rollover collision,” White said.

“We went down to assist with traffic until it was cleaned up and Volker Stevin had come through with the sanding trucks.”

The scene took approximately two hours to clear up, White added.
