A resident returning home on Sept. 21 walked in to find a strange woman in the residence in Coopers Crossing, according to Airdrie RCMP Media Liaison Constable Jason Curtis.

“When the homeowner came home, the individual had a basketful of items, which when they were confronted, they set down and they left quickly,” he said. “I don’t believe they got away with any items.”

According to Curtis, the suspect got into the home through a basement window. Curtis confirmed the window was damaged, indicating the suspect may have broken in.

Curtis said the daytime break and enter, which took place at approximately 3 p.m. is “concerning and not common for Airdrie.”

“The one thing we want to encourage people to do is to call police right away, immediately,” he said. “As soon as it’s safe to do so. The citizen (in this incident) definitely did the right thing in not attempting to restrain the individual but just let them go. They took their safety into account.”

The resident was able to provide RCMP with a description of the female suspect.

She is described as Caucasian, approximately 30-years-old, with blond hair. She was wearing a pink hoodie and black leggings.

Cigarette Theft

A lone thief was able to gain access to the back storage area of the 7-11 convenience store on Luxstone Boulevard Sept. 24, breaking open the lock on a storage cabinet and making off with a substantial number of cartons of cigarettes.

The theft occurred at approximately 11:15 p.m., according to Curtis. Staff noticed the theft and immediately called RCMP; however, the suspect had already fled through a back door exit. He damaged the back door lock as he was making his escape.

Airdrie City RCMP and the RCMP Forensic Investigation Section are investigating the incident. Video surveillance footage and witness statements have been collected.

There were a number of customers in the store at the time of the theft.

“We interviewed quite a few individuals who were still on scene,” he said. “Staff noticed this almost immediately. I think on the video surveillance, from the time the individual enters the back room to the time staff enter the back room and notice, is probably not even two minutes.”

The lone suspect is described as having a medium complexion and an average height and build. He was wearing a black hat with white lettering, a white hoodie, blue track pants with white strip and a red backpack with a white maple leaf.

No one was injured during the incident.

Arrest Made

David Scott Foran, 44, of Calgary has been arrested by RCMP and charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000 in connection with a break in and theft from Airdrie Truck Accessories on East Lake Boulevard on Sept. 21, Curtis said.

Foran has been released on bail to await a first court appearance.

A warrant has also been issued for Paul Christopher Black, 41, of Calgary. Curtis said Foran and Black are accused of trying to sell eight sets of tires and rims stolen from the Airdrie business on the online buy-and-sell site, Kijiji.

According to Curtis, the stolen rims and tires were extremely “distinctive” and “exceedingly expensive.” Some people using Kijiji saw them for sale and reported it to police. Curtis did not know how much the rims and tires were worth.

Hit and Run

RCMP is looking for the driver of an SUV that hit a pedestrian at the intersection of First Avenue and Edmonton Trail on Sept. 18.

According to Curtis, the pedestrian was crossing at the crosswalk at approximately 11:40 a.m. and was struck at low speed by an off-white SUV with a chrome grill.

The driver of the SUV fled the area without checking to make sure the pedestrian was okay, heading south on Edmonton Trail. The pedestrian was not injured.

Curtis said investigators are looking to identify the driver of the SUV and to speak to witnesses of the incident.
