Yet, each flu season is a little different from the one before it. And because influenza viruses change, so does the annual influenza vaccine.

This flu season, three different strains of influenza (H1N1, H3N2 and influenza B) could show up in Alberta. Whereas last year, two different vaccines were needed to protect against pandemic H1N1 and seasonal influenza, this year, Albertans will be offered a single influenza shot that will provide protection against all three strains of flu.

Dr. Judy MacDonald, medical officer of health with Alberta Health Services and the physician overseeing the planning and delivery of its seasonal influenza vaccine program, strongly recommends everyone in Alberta get a flu shot this year.

“It’s the single most-effective thing you can do to protect yourself and your family,” said MacDonald.

“Every year is a new year. No matter what you did last year about influenza vaccine, you still need to get a flu shot this year to reduce your risk of influenza.”

Young children six to 23 months old, seniors 65 years and older, long-term care residents, pregnant and breastfeeding women and anyone with a chronic medical condition are at higher risk for influenza or complications.

AHS mass influenza immunization clinics started on Oct. 12. There are two locations where Rocky View residents can get immunized:

• Cochrane Public Health Office – Oct. 26 and Nov. 2.

• Airdrie Town and Country Centre – Oct. 26, 27, Nov. 2, 3.
