County staff is preparing an intermunicpal development plan (IDP) between Chestermere and Rocky View County.
Discussion on creating the intermunicpal development plan (IDP) began last summer when both the County and the Town approved the terms of reference.
An IDP is created between adjacent municipalities to guide future planning of lands, which may be of common interests for both municipalities.
The plan also includes procedures for conflict resolution and attempts to determine future land use within the area.
Currently, Rocky View County has IDPs with the City of Calgary, Airdrie and the Town of Cochrane. Staff is finalizing an IDP with Crossfield.
Sherry Baers, manager of planning development for the County, said Airdrie’s IDP is undergoing revisions to include a recent annexation of land. In March 2012, Airdrie annexed 12,640 acres of land from the County.
Staff is now preparing to begin the fifth IDP with the Town of Chestermere. During an intermunicipal committee meeting in November, terms of references for an IDP were discussed, which included a study area map.
Representatives for the Town of Chestermere requested the proposed study area expand to include land located north of Highway 1 and south of the hamlet of Conrich.
The request to change the boundary was brought to council Jan. 8 and was unanimously approved.
Baers said staff is in the “very beginning stages” and is still preparing information to study the area before creating the IDP.
She couldn’t give a timeline for the completion of a draft, noting it will depend on the time commitment available from County staff and the Town of Chestermere staff.
