An Irricana councillor has big plans for the northeast communities of Rocky View.
During council June 17, Deputy Mayor Larry Martin shared his vision for an athletic field on school reserve land, located near the south soccer field in town.
“Currently, there are some baseball diamonds and a couple of soccer fields,” he explained of the current land use in the area.
“Over the course of the next year, I want a regulation football field with a four-lane track around it,” he said, adding that the field would also be large enough for soccer games.
Currently, the highest level of soccer offered in Irricana is U12 and he said there isn’t any football teams north of Airdrie.
“Parents are driving their kids to practice in Airdrie four nights a week.”
He said having a field would mean a northeast Rocky View football league could be created and the soccer league could expand.
Martin also said being able to host tournaments would mean a boost to the economy as people from outside could shop and eat at local businesses.
“We want this as a regional plan for all of Rocky View,” he said.
Councillors supported his idea and said it would be a great service for the area.
“Man, the kids would love it,” said Mayor Lisa Constantini.
“I’m on board with this too,” said Councillor Josh Taylor.
Martin said plans are still in the early stages with costs and exact design still to be worked out. Currently, he is collecting letters of support from nearby schools and community groups but said he wants to get moving on this project sooner than later.
Plans are still to be worked out but Martin said he is hoping to receive grants to help fund the cost of the field.
I KNOW IT IS NOT TOTALLY PLANNED OUT BUT WHO DOES HE SEE PAYING FOR THIS. TAXPAYERS?? TEAMS (IE: PLAYERS PARENTS)??? FUNRAISING?? A COMBINATION?
