Rocky View County council unanimously approved $25,000 for upgrades to Cochrane Arena, Oct. 25.
The money, taken from the Ranch Lands Recreation Board’s reserve account, will go towards paving the area behind of the arena to better dispose of ice and upgrading the washrooms.
“I think it is a worthwhile cause,” said Reeve Rolly Ashdown. “The Cochrane Arena is well used by the Cochrane and area residents and visitors. We are pleased to provide the funding to enable the centre to complete the necessary upgrades.”
The Cochrane Arena was built in 1960, and serves the local hockey, ringette and figure skating communities for 10 months a year.
The facility, managed by the Spray Lake Family Sports Centre, also contains a day care, meeting room and concession area. It has capacity for 1,000 spectators and is available for trade shows and events in the summer.
Staff will do a lot of the work to complete the upgrades in house.
Paving in the back will help extend the life of the ice resurfacer. The washrooms will get new toilets, sinks, urinals and partitions.
The Ranch Lands Recreation Board supported the request.
