CAO Alvin Melton informed council at the April 15 council meeting the second leak in the copper service line in Gib Bell Close has been repaired. The new leak was found about 10 feet from the initial leak, which was repaired in March.

The public works department has repaired four water leaks in town since the beginning of the year.

The repairs have resulted in a decrease in water consumption for the town from several hundred cubic metres per day to about 80 to 100 cubic metres daily, a savings of about $90,000 per year, said Melton.

After seeking legal counsel and reviewing the Municipal Governing Act (MGA), a reserve bid of $207,000 has been set for an Irricana property that is three years in tax arrears. This reserve bid equates to 10 per cent below the market value.

As reported in the April 8 edition of Rocky View Weekly, the request for decision was first brought to council April 2 with a suggested reserve bid of 25 per cent below market value. However, the motion was tabled at that meeting due to questions of liability.

“The concern is if we lower (the reserve bid) any more, the potential is the owner can come back and say we didn’t sell (the property) close enough to market value,” Deputy Mayor Larry Martin said.

Melton said both the MGA and legal counsel suggested 10 per cent below market value is within a reasonable range.

The auction is set for Sept. 21, Melton added.
