After an extensive investigation, Cochrane RCMP have arrested and charged the second suspect in a recent residential break-in at a home in the Springbank area on Oct. 18. During the incident, a number of items were stolen including passports, credit cards, a new 60-inch TV, a rare red Fender Jazz Master guitar, an iPad and a red Gateway laptop computer.

Douglas Glen Weaver, 32, of Calgary contacted RCMP on Dec. 5 saying he was aware of the warrant for his arrest and wanted to turn himself in. RCMP quickly located Weaver and arrested him without incident.

Weaver has been charged with break and enter, as well as an additional 16 charges relating to the use of stolen credit cards.

He has since been released from police custody and will appear in Cochrane Provincial Court on Dec. 20 at 9:30 a.m.

Christopher Cole Thompson, 30, of Calgary, has also been charged in the crime. Cochrane RCMP and Calgary Police Service are continuing the investigation and efforts to return all the stolen property to the rightful owners.

Missing man found

On Dec. 1 at 8:45 p.m., Cochrane RCMP were called out to the Waiparous area near Cochrane to investigate the whereabouts of a missing person.

The 57-year-old Calgary man, had apparently gone into the area with his 4x4 and was expected to be home the same day, but failed to return.

RCMP members, along with assistance from a Kananaskis Emergency Services Conservation Officer, patrolled the backcountry overnight but were unable to locate the man.

The following morning, additional resources were contacted and brought in to aide in the search including helicopters, which were unable to fly due to poor weather conditions.

RCMP continued the search on ATVs and were able to locate the man who was in good condition and appeared to be unharmed.

Upon speaking with the man investigators learned that he had become stuck and spent the night in his vehicle, and was in the process of leaving the site when RCMP found him. He will be recovering his vehicle at a later date.

Liquor store robbery

On Nov. 29 at 8:50 p.m., Cochrane RCMP responded to a 911 call about an armed robbery at the Late Hours Liquor store, located at 519-1st Street West.

Two men, one with a mask and the other with his face covered by a bandana, entered the store and approached the front clerk. One of the suspects was armed with a metal weapon, which he used to attack the clerk.

The two suspects then proceeded to steal a large amount of liquor, which they placed in two backpacks they brought with them. They then fled the scene on foot. RCMP Police Dog Services attended the scene but the suspects were not located.

Both men are described as white in their late teens or early 20s, with a medium to slim build between 5’10” and 6’ in height.

The clerk was taken to hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and then released.

The armed robbery is still under investigation by the Cochrane RCMP. Anyone with information is encouraged to call 403-851-8000.

Horsing around

On Nov. 26, kindergarten students at Prairie Waters Elementary School in Chestermere were treated to a special visit by a few members of the Calgary Police Service (CPS) Mounted Unit.

The visit, which was arranged by CPS Sergeant Brent Jacklin, consisted of a greeting by Constables Scott Campbell and Garth Blais, as well as their horses.

Sergeant Jacklin, along with CPS Constable Hilary Jennings, spoke with the classes about safety and the different roles police officers play within the community.

Also in attendance was Chestermere RCMP Constable Alix Blakie, who assisted the students as they visited with the horses.

“It is always a great thing to bring officers to the schools to meet students,” said Chestermere RCMP Staff Sergeant Glenn Henry.

“We like to show kids that we are in the community and that they don’t need to be afraid of the police. We are here to help them and teaming up with CPS to do that is always something we enjoy being a part of.”

After the visit students were each given a special badge and colouring book, along with the chance to sit inside one of the police vehicles.

“The event was a nice way for the students to meet the different police officers and a great way for little persons to get close to some really big horses,” said Henry.

“It was also another seamless interaction by the Chestermere RCMP with the Calgary Police Service partners. The continued community support from the staff of the Prairie Waters Elementary School is always very much appreciated and certainly recognized during this visit.”
