City staff remindsresidents about street sweeping

The City of Airdrie’s Public Works crews are set to begin residential street sweeping on April 29.

Residents are asked to help crews make a clean sweep by ensuring their cars are moved off the street.

“Look for a big orange sign at the entrances to your neighbourhood and ensure your vehicle is moved off the street on the dates indicated on this sign,” said Mike Avramenko, team leader of roads.

Residents are asked to park vehicles on their driveway or rear garage pad.

“Orange signs are not located on each street, but at the main entrances only,” added Avramenko.

Residents can also follow the crew’s progress through Airdrie by following updates on Twitter and at airdrie.ca The order neighbourhoods will be swept in and the tentative dates for sweeping are also available on the street sweeping map.

Due to the success in 2012, the City of Airdrie will again be using a tag and tow program to enforce the parking bans.

“Residents did a great job working with our public works crews to clear the streets by removing cars. The ultimate goal is to be able to eliminate the tag and tow program because all residents comply in moving their vehicles,” said Avramenko.

In 2012, the City of Airdrie towed 77 per cent less cars than in 2011.

As part of the program, vehicles are towed at the owner’s expense, but the program does not generate revenue for the City, it simply covers the cost of towing cars within the neighbourhood.

“Street sweeping is important for all residents’ safety and for the environment,” said Avramenko.

“Street sweeping removes winter debris and prevents it from entering the storm drains, keeping city waterways cleaner. It cuts down on air pollution caused by dust and keeps the roads safer by improving mobility and by removing loose gravel.”

Street sweeping inquiries can be made to public works at 403-948-8415.
