At their regular meeting on Sept. 2, Airdrie City council voted to table a decision of whether or not to accept the proposed Airdrie City Plan until their next meeting on Sept. 15 to allow aldermen time to review all the new information presented by a number of developers in attendance.
The proposed City Plan is a long-range strategic plan that sets the direction for new development throughout the city, including development of the annexed lands.
At their Aug. 5 meeting, council decided to reopen the public hearing about the plan on Sept. 2, after questions were raised by residents and developers about the process used to present the plan.
A number of developers took the opportunity on Sept. 2 to present council with information about how they would propose to develop the land encompassed by the plan, leading Mayor Peter Brown to request more time to review what was presented.
“We got an hour-and-a-half of information tonight. I could not digest this and say ‘this goes in, that doesn’t’,” Brown said.
Brown also said he was disappointed developers did not present information in such a way that showed they had the best interests of the City at heart.
“I would have preferred to have heard ‘how are we going to work together to make this the best possible city’ (from the developers),” Brown said. “Instead all I heard was ‘I want to do this and I want to do that.’”
The City Plan will come back to City council on Sept. 15 for third reading.
