City asks local businesses for opinions on new bylaw

City planners are beginning to collect feedback on the first draft of a new land use bylaw.

City planners are beginning to collect feedback on the first draft of a new land use bylaw.

“We’ve drafted part of it, so now we’re doing some open houses and collecting feedback from developers and the business community,” said Kent Rupert, team lead for Airdrie Economic Development.

The land use bylaw is a planning tool that outlines how and what can occur on properties such as lot size, building placement and height, parking, landscaping, and sign placement.

Rupert said the land use bylaw is a “living document” that needs to be revisited and updated as the city changes.

On May 1, the City will host its second annual Planning for Prosperity event, which asks business owners to provide input into the creation of Airdrie’s growth plans.

“Last year was an update and talk about annexation and where we were at,” said Rupert, referencing the 12,640 acres the City acquired from Rocky View County in 2012.

“This one is looking at growth plans, policies and regulations,” he said.

He added there will be targeted discussions on the draft land use bylaw as well as an update from the Economic Development and Planning and Development departments.

Rupert said City staff has already met with developers once, and after the planning meeting next week will use the feedback they’ve collected, rework the draft and bring it back to the community again through another open house. If all goes as planned, it could be presented to council as soon as this fall. The event runs May 1 from 8 to 10 a.m. in the Rotary Room at Genesis Place. Interested business owners are asked to RSVP before April 26 to [email protected]
