Chestermere RCMP is warning residents to be diligent with locking with their vehicle doors, as there have been “lots”of reports of theft from unlocked cars.

On Aug. 8, RCMP received a call that two Chestermere boys aged 15 and 16 were rummaging through unlocked vehicles parked along Springmere Drive on the town’s east side.

According to RCMP, officers searched the area but could not locate the suspects.

A short time later, RCMP members observed a red truck driving erratically at excessive speeds leaving the Springmere area.

“The actions of the driver alerted officers to his whereabouts and they were able to find the vehicle within minutes,” said Staff Sergeant Glenn Henry.

RCMP found the truck at a home in Hawkmere area later that morning. The drivers were not found but officers did find numerous GPS units that were reported to be stolen.

According to RCMP, officers inquired at a neighbour’s home, and they identified the 16-year-old boy who was determined as the person responsible.

“We can’t say to much (as the suspects are underage), but the vehicle lead us to the area where we conducted the investigation, and now we have two suspects,” he said.

The youth – who cannot be identified under the Young Offenders Act - was arrested and charged with possession of stolen property obtained by crime. Another 15-year-old boy is being investigated as the second suspect.

Chestermere RCMP are asking residents in the Springmere and Oakmere areas to check their vehicles for missing contents.

Identifying vehicle

On Aug. 7 at a 10:30 a.m., Airdrie Rural RCMP received a complaint of theft of construction materials in Crossfield. According to RCMP, 10 minutes before the call was placed to police, two men in a red Chevrolet pick-up truck pulled up to a home that was undergoing renovations on Harrison Street.

The men then loaded a large amount of vinyl siding (of which the value is not known) into the back of the pick-up truck and left.

The property owner was able to obtain a picture of the vehicle leaving and the license plate prior to contacting the police.

According to RCMP, the plate had been reported stolen from a vehicle in Airdrie and was not a match to the vehicle. Police did not provide a description of the suspects.

The Airdrie Rural RCMP is requesting assistance from residents of the public who may have information regarding this event.
