Cochrane RCMP have laid a second-degree murder charge against Tylen Tray Poucette, 20, of the Stoney Nakoda First Nation. Poucette is accused of the Aug. 7 murder of Kori Wesley, 21, also of the Stoney Nakoda First Nation.
Wesley’s body was found near the Chiniki Rodeo Grounds at approximately 3:20 p.m., according to Alberta RCMP “K” Division Media Spokesperson Corporal Laurel Scott.
“We got a call from somebody who had found the body themselves on the rodeo grounds,” she said. “We attended right away.”
Poucette was arrested without incident Aug. 7 and remanded into custody, where he remains.
“I believe he turned himself in or came to us,” Scott said.
The Southern Alberta RCMP Major Crimes and Cochrane RCMP worked jointly on the investigation, according to Scott.
An autopsy was conducted by the Calgary Medical Examiner’s department Aug. 9 to determine the cause of manner of death. Scott said details about the murder will not be released since the matter is now before the courts.
Scott said the Calgary and Lethbridge Forensic Identification Sections, the RCMP Police Dog Services and the Alberta RCMP “K” Division Interview Assistance Team worked together to identify a suspect, leading to the arrest of Poucette.
“This would be our normal course of practice in a case like this,” Scott said. “We draw in these different resources.”
Poucette appeared in Cochrane Provincial Court Aug. 16. The outcome of that court appearance was not known by press time.
