The City presented the Airdrie 2014 Alberta Summer Games Society with the second $100,000 installment of funds to support the Games, which will bring dozens of athletes to the community next summer.
“We have been working hard and we thank council for all you’ve done to help us out with the Games so far,” said Al Jones, the society’s board chair.
“We have a deep appreciation for the confidence you’ve shown for our board of directors.”
The City will provide a total of $300,000 cash to the Games society over three years ($100,000 per year) and $300,000 in gifts in kind, as outlined in the three-party agreement between the Alberta Recreation, Sport, Parks and Wildlife Foundation, the games society and the City of Airdrie.
“We are very excited to be hosting the 2014 Alberta Summer Games,” said Mayor Peter Brown.
“Not only will it provide us with a great opportunity to showcase our city, it will also provide substantial economic benefits and wonderful volunteer opportunities for our residents.”
Jones said the society is following the provincial mandate and is on schedule for a number of its goals.
“We are pleased with the progress we are making,” he added.
The 2014 Alberta Summer Games in Airdrie will feature 15 sports at venues across the city.
The proposed sports for the games include: athletics (track and field), baseball, basketball, canoe-kayak, BMX, mountain biking, football, lacrosse, rugby, soccer, softball, swimming, team handball, triathlon and volleyball.
“We are working hard to make Airdrie the example of how to present an event of the magnitude of the Alberta Summer Games and are grateful to the City of Airdrie for the support they have shown through both their monetary and ‘in kind’ commitment to the Games,” said Dan Oneil, director of promotion for the society.
