Beiseker deputy mayor running for re-election

Longtime Beiseker resident and current deputy mayor of the Village, Al Henuset, has announced that he will run for re-election in October’s municipal election. If re-elected this will be Henuset’s third term.

Longtime Beiseker resident and current deputy mayor of the Village, Al Henuset, has announced that he will run for re-election in October’s municipal election.

If re-elected this will be Henuset’s third term.

“I enjoy what I’m doing and I love representing the people of Beiseker,” he said.

Henuset was elected for the term of 2004 to 2007, but lost in a second attempt in 2007.

He ran a successful campaign in 2010 and is hoping for a repeat.

“I’m a firm believer that you should give back to your community and (being on council) is a logical step.”

For Henuset, one of his major issues for the coming term is stepping up enforcement for unsightly areas in the village.

“I would like to try to make the village appear a little better,” he said.

“There are too many unsightly premises in the area. People need to take pride in their yards.”

Along with increased bylaw enforcement, Henuset would also like to see a trail network put in place and the Grasslands of Beiseker subdivision get off the ground.

The development project is located on the west side of the Village and lots in Phase 1 are now selling.

The development will feature a shopping centre, school and restaurants along residential subdivisions.

Dwindling populations are also on the radar for Henuset, a problem that is effecting most small rural communities in Alberta.

“I guess we’re going to have to advertise and try to bring people back,” he said, adding the new Grasslands of Beiseker subdivision should help elevate the Village’s profile.

Looking back over his two terms on council, Henuset said he is proud of his contribution with the Main Street committee to revitalize one block of First Street downtown.

Henuset admits the current council works well together, adding that while they don’t always agree they keep the discussions professional and constructive.

During his time on council, Henuset has been involved with the economic development committee, Beiseker Agricultural Society and the Beiseker Community Centre.

Henuset said he has the full blessing of his family and is looking forward to a third term.

Nominations closed Sept. 23 (after press time) for candidates wishing to register in the October municipal election.
