Airdrie RCMP have laid an additional 13 charges against former George McDougall High School teacher John Christopher Miller.
Miller, 35, was first arrested in Calgary on Oct. 17 and charged with sexual assault and sexual exploitation after allegedly having sexual relations with a 17-year-old student at the school.
While conducting a routine patrol on Dec. 19, an RCMP school resource officer saw Miller’s vehicle leaving the area of the school at around 11 a.m. The officer determined Miller had been contacting the alleged 17-year-old victim, against a court order. Miller was later arrested at his home in Airdrie and charged with 12 counts of breach of recognizance and one count of sexual interference. He is now in police custody.
CrossIron Mills shooting
Police are investigating what appears to be a targeted shooting of an Airdrie man, which took place just after 6 p.m. on Dec. 19.
The unidentified 42-year-old, who is known to police, was driven by a friend to the Peter Lougheed Hospital after suffering what appeared to be a gunshot wound near Bass Pro at CrossIron Mills mall.
Calgary Police Service was called to the hospital and began an initial investigation before turning the incident over to Airdrie RCMP.
The officer in charge of Airdrie’s RCMP detachment, Insp.Tony Hamori, said the public should not be alarmed.
“We are confident… that this incident was not a random act,” said Hamori. “Our investigative team believes the victim and the offender are known to each other.”
Hamori said police have a possible suspect. They are not releasing a name, but say the suspect was driving a white 1998 to 2002 Cadillac Deville CTS or STS. The four-door vehicle has tan-covered leather seats and a sunroof.
Hamori added there will be an increased presence of uniformed officers in and around the mall throughout the holiday shopping season.
“We are committed to ensuring that the public feels safe,” he said.
