The Government of Alberta approved Airdrieís annexation of 12,640 acres of land from Rocky View County, March 22.

The move came after an agreement was reached last May following more than a year of negotiation between the County and the City.

Airdrie Mayor Peter Brown said he would like to thank County and City staff for all of their hard work.

ìI think this is tremendous,î he said. ìThis annexation is one of the most important opportunities to plan the future of Airdrie.î

Rocky View Reeve Rolly Ashdown said the process went seamlessly from start to finish.

ìIt is just a great monument to what happens when different municipalities work in total collaboration,î said Ashdown. ìWe are happy to work with our neighbours in allowing them to pursue their goals for the future.î

Airdrie is now responsible for the land to the west, north and east of city limits, which has a population of about 714 people. The annexation area includes 213 homes and 52.8 kilometres of roads.

All agricultural land within the annexed area will be pegged to County tax rates for 30 years and non-agriculture land will maintain Rocky View rates for 20 years.

Airdrie will take over agricultural services within the annexationís borders, but wonít extend city services, such as garbage, to the area.

According to Ashdown, the Countyís agricultural department will assist the City of Airdrie in farm-related issues.

ìWe are glad to support them in any way we can to help (former residents) in the transition from a rural municipality to an urban one,î said Ashdown. ìWe truly know they are in good hands and we wish them well.î

The newly acquired land is expected to be enough for 50 years of Airdrie growth.
