Police have charged a Toronto man with 32 criminal charges after a routine traffic stop at around 5 p.m., Dec. 11.
A member of the Airdrie Integrated Traffic Unit (ITU) stopped a vehicle for speeding on Highway 2 near Airdrie. While speaking to the driver, the officer noted a strong marijuana spell emanating from the vehicle. The male occupants of the vehicle were detained and police conducted a search of the vehicle that located an empty Ziploc bag with a strong marijuana smell.
Police also found a cloth bag under the passenger’s seat that contained eight forged Ontario driver’s licences, all with the photograph of the passenger, and seven forged Social Insurance cards.
Police also found 57 prepaid Visa and gift cards, the origin and authenticity of which have not yet been determined.
The passenger, 27-year-old Trevor Pannell, is now facing 32 Criminal Code charges including using a forged document, possession of another person’s identity information and possession of another person’s identity document.
“The interdiction of criminals while they are travelling on Alberta highways is one of the top priorities of the ITU’s in the Province of Alberta,” said Corp. Darrin Turnbull, RCMP spokesperson. “This traffic stop is another excellent example of how the investigation of a routine traffic offence can lead to the detection of criminal activity, promoting safer communities.”
