A 39-year-old Airdrie man is dead after being T-boned by another vehicle in the intersection of Simon’s Valley Road and Big Hill Springs Road, Jan. 9.

Airdrie Rural RCMP and Airdrie Rural Traffic Unit responded to the two-vehicle collision at around 6:30 a.m.

The man, who was driving a blue Ford F-150, was headed south on Simon’s Valley Road when he was broadsided by a silver Jeep Cherokee, headed west on Big Hill Springs Road because the driver of the Jeep failed to stop at a stop sign.

The 39-year-old man was airlifted by STARS Air Ambulance to the Foothills Hospital in Calgary where he died from his injuries. The 25-year-old driver received non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital by ground ambulance.

As of press time, charges are pending and police are investigating.

Jewelry heist

Cochrane RCMP is looking for a man and a woman who allegedly stole more than $17,000 from a local jeweler, Dec. 17.

At around 2:20 p.m. the man and woman entered Goldtown Jeweller in Cochrane.

A surveillance camera showed the man leaned over the display case three times and opened it from the back.

He allegedly removed two pieces of jewelry, which he placed in his pocket, while the owner was distracted with another customer.

The woman attempted to block what the man was doing.

The duo left the business shortly after.

A yellow-gold diamond ring, valued at $16,000, and a yellow gold necklace, valued at $1,100, were missing.

The man is described as heavy set, about six feet tall, wearing a white or light-coloured ball cap, white outer jacket and red shirt, dark-coloured pants and light shoes. The woman is described as heavy set, about 5’8” tall with dark, straight hair approximately six inches below her shoulders. She was wearing a dark blue winter jacket with yellow and red stripes on the shoulders, dark pants and dark shoes.

Multiple arrests

RCMP officers arrested three Saskatchewan men while on routine patrol on Highway 9 east of Beiseker, Jan. 1.

At around 2:20 p.m., two Airdrie Integrated Traffic Unit officers observed a black Ford Escape with a licence plate that didn’t match the vehicle travelling westbound at 29 kilometres per hour over the speed limit.

The officers stopped the vehicle and were unable to determine the identity of the male driver as he was uncooperative. There were also two male passengers.

Airdrie Rural RCMP officers were called to assist, and subsequently took the driver into custody. A search of the vehicle yielded a sawed-off shotgun, ammunition, a machete and a small quantity of illegal drugs.

RCMP took all three men into custody: Samuel Blackmore, 22, James Clifford Angell, 26, and Jason Harry Heaton, 25, all of Saskatoon.

Power outage

Electricity was out for the majority of east Chestermere residents and businesses for about three hours in the middle of the night, Jan. 9.

The outage, which took place between midnight and 3 a.m., was the result of a vehicle hitting a fence and a power pole at a residence near the intersection of East Chestermere Drive and Merganser Drive East.

Police say the vehicle, which fled the scene, likely sustained heavy front-end damage.

If you have information on any crime, contact your local RCMP detachment or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
