No injuries were reported following a fire that broke out in an attached garage of a townhouse complex in southwest Airdrie on May 9.

According to a City of Airdrie press release, the call came in at 8:01 p.m. at the 100 block of Windstone Park, and four apparatus and 13 firefighters from the Airdrie Fire Department responded.

Two occupants of the townhouse had evacuated prior to Airdrie Fire Department's arrival, but their cat remained inside.

Heavy smoke was encountered upon entering the home but the fire was quickly extinguished by the first arriving crew.

The homeowners' cat was found unharmed by firefighters, according to the City's release.

Following the incident, AFD shared a safety message to never go back inside for pets in the case of a fire, and instead inform firefighters if a pet is trapped.

Neighbouring households were briefly evacuated as a precaution and the home was cleared of smoke before the departure of AFD crews.

The fire is under investigation but has been deemed not suspicious. Damage is estimated to be approximately $10,000.
