A 70-year-old woman was killed in a motor vehicle accident on June 19 on Highway 22 near James Walker Trail.

A 70-year-old woman was killed in a motor vehicle accident on June 19 on Highway 22 near James Walker Trail.

Investigation revealed the woman was travelling northbound on Highway 22 entering Cochrane, while a full-sized van was travelling southbound in the left driving lane.

The woman’s vehicle veered across the centre line and struck the van head on. At the time of the accident, a school bus was travelling in the same direction as the van in the right driving lane and was struck by the van after the initial collision. There was minor damage done to the bus but there were no children on board.

Cochrane RCMP along with Cochrane Fire and EMS responded to the collision at approximately 2:45 p.m.; the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the van was transported by ambulance to Foothills Hospital with minor injuries.

Speed and alcohol are not considered to be factors in the accident and although there was light rain and roads were wet at the time, they are not being considered contributing factors.

The woman was a resident of Cochrane and her name will not be released.

Collision involving RCMP

A Cochrane RCMP officer was taken to Cochrane Medical Centre after being involved in a collision at the intersection of Highway 22 and Highway 1A on June 17.

Two RCMP vehicles were responding to a report of a suicidal person in Morley at around 8:15 a.m.; when the officers approached the scene there was significant volume of traffic.

“The volume wasn’t due to anything in particular,” said Cochrane RCMP Cpl. Greg Stannard. “It was just normal rush hour traffic.”

The officers activated their lights and sirens and when the first car entered the intersection, it was struck by a southbound SUV.

The driver of the SUV was a 16-year-old male who was checked by EMS at the scene and released.

The 30-year-old male officer was taken to Cochrane Medical Centre where he was later released with minor injuries.

Traffic at the intersection was delayed for approximately three hours while the scene was investigated by Cochrane RCMP as well as a collision analyst from K Division.

The investigation is ongoing, the names of those involved in the collision will not be released.

If you have information on any unsolved crime, call your local RCMP detachment.
