The 'furious boil' of August

American actor, writer, musician, songwriter and comedian Henry Rollins said the month of August “brings into sharp focus and a furious boil” everything he had planned to do in the preceding months.

August does often feel busy, especially here at Airdrie Public Library (APL).

No matter that there’s already a flurry of planning and preparation for our upcoming and robust fall programming, summer programs have a few weeks yet before ending mid-August.

Little and tall, and big and small people come to APL every day to participate in preschool programs like Little Explorers and Music Mondays, or tween programs such as Coding Ninjas and Minecraft Mornings.

As well, hundreds of TD Summer Reading Club (SRC) participants will be traipsing into the library until the last session on Aug. 16 (more on the SRC wrap-up event next week).

There’s Teen and Adult Art Saturday Aug. 10, Cautious Consumerism Aug. 14, Teen Gaming Aug. 15, and the Teen Summer Library Experience (TSLE).

This program is for youth aged 13 to 18, and asks them to track reading and to complete art, literature and writing challenges to earn points towards a grand prize, as well as a chance to win individual prizes for each challenge.

TSLE ends Aug. 16, and you can find more information at teensummerlibraryexperience.ca

Also ending on Aug. 16 is our First Annual Poetry Contest, Poetry in Motion, a joint effort with the City of Airdrie.

Blind judging of submission will be completed by Governor General Award finalist Weyman Chan, and there’s still time to enter one of two categories – Open and Youth (ages 13-17) – with the winner in each category receiving an iPad.

Selected poems will also be featured on Airdrie Transit Ice buses in September in honour of Alberta Cultural Days.

See our website for important details on how to enter.

So, yes, August is a bit of a “furious boil,” but what else should Albertans expect from our short summers.
