Pink fire engine making its rounds in Airdrie for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Airdrie residents will see the firetruck responding to calls in the community throughout October, and when the crews are finished addressing emergency events, they will connect with the public and share stories of their personal experiences involving cancer.

The Airdrie Professional Firefighters' Association's pink fire engine will be responding to calls throughout October, to promote Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The Airdrie Professional Firefighters Association is giving a front-line fire engine a new look this month.

The association is bringing back its pink firetruck, to raise awareness during October, which is recognized nationally as Cancer Awareness Month.

"With the goal of raising awareness around the impact of cancer on the public and the fire service, this front line engine will be seen throughout Airdrie for the month of October," stated an APFA press release, which added the association is working with the Airdrie Fire Department, Mattamy Homes, and Cowan Graphics on the initiative. "Cancer touches so many people in the community, [so] Airdrie firefighters were looking for a way to engage in the conversation around Cancer prevalence for the month of October."

According to APFA's release, Mattamy Homes stepped forward to help finance the project, and Cowan Graphics wrapped the truck in pink.

Airdrie residents will see the firetruck responding to calls in the community throughout October, and when the crews are finished addressing emergency events, they will connect with the public and share stories of their personal experiences involving cancer.

For local firefighters, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an emotional time, given the increased health risks associated with the career.

"In addition to the risk faced by the public with a cancer diagnosis, firefighters carry more than two times the risk of a testicular, mesothelioma, or brain cancer diagnosis than the general public and four times the risk of cervical cancer," stated the press release.

"We encourage you to have your picture taken with the truck and make a donation to any of your favourite and trusted charities that support those impacted by the disease."

To start the month off, the pink wrapped engine was unveiled at the Airdrie Homecoming event on Oct. 1.
