Nice Horse takes to the stage at the Bert Church Live Theatre this Saturday.
Featuring George Mac grad Katie Rox on vocals, banjo and acoustic guitar, Brandi Sidoryk on vocals and bass, Tara McLeod on vocals and electric guitar, and Krista Wodelet on vocals and drums, the fierce foursome has been making waves on the Canadian country music scene since 2016. The group’s first big hit “Mansplainin’" garnered widespread praise as a female power anthem, eventually winning Country Recording of the Year at the 2019 Alberta Country Music Awards.
But then the pandemic came, and it was a real challenge for the group, said Rox in a recent interview with the Airdrie City View.
“We had a lot of momentum, and with the pandemic it felt like really hitting a brick wall,” she said.
However, the group continued to collaborate in new and inventive ways when they couldn’t tour together.
“During that time we started a podcast, and we were trying to be as busy as possible,” Rox remembered. “We did a music video we ended up making ourselves. We weren’t able to be together so we did a music video using green screens, and we ended up winning our very first Canadian Country Music Award (in 2022) for that.”
The song in question was “High School,” and the extraordinary video and lyrics reflecting on growth, change, lost hopes, and high school dreams brought the group to a whole new level of stardom.
“It was a little silver lining in a very difficult time,” Rox recalled.
The four women have continued to put out the hits ever since, including their most recent single, “Somethin’ Bout You.”
Rox said awareness of and demand for the group continues to grow, and Nice Horse embarked on one of the busiest tours in the band’s history this past summer.
Rox is looking forward to coming back to Airdrie for a spell to share some of the band’s heartfelt tunes with the hometown crowd this Saturday.
“I am so excited,” she said. “I have never played at Bert Church Theatre before; so I am really looking forward to it.”
