Award winning author Lee Kvern will be sharing her love of short fiction with local writers during the month of November as the APL's Writer-In-Residence.

This year’s Writer-in-Residence at the Airdrie Public Library (APL) is Calgary’s Lee Kvern.

Lee is an awarding-winning author of short stories and novels. Her collection of 13 short stories, 7 Ways to Sunday, has earned the national CBC Literary Award, Western Magazine Award, Hazel Hilles Memorial Short Fiction Prize, and has twice received the Howard 'O' Hagan Award and CBC Alberta Anthology.

In addition, her novels, Afterall, The Matter of Sylvie, and This is a Crime have been nominated for various awards.

Lee’s work has been published in Grain, Event, Descant, Air Canada enRoute, Tishman Review, the Globe & Mail newspaper, subTerrain, Loft 112, and Radical Books.

She also just completed her fourth novel, Catch you on the Flipside.

Lee has also been a Writer-in-Residence at the Banff Centre, the Alexandra Centre, Calgary Public Library, and with the Canadian Authors Association, so we are fortunate to have someone with this kind of experience.

As in previous years, the month-long program offers workshops and blue pencil sessions with the author. Both workshops and blue pencil sessions have already, begun but some are still open for registration.

The next two workshops from Lee are Nov. 17, Practice Makes Perfect, and Nov 23, No Back Story Short Story.

If you are a new writer, experienced, or seeking to improve or writing, you can submit your work of a maximum of 10 pages for a blue pencil session. The sessions are 50 minutes long, but we encourage you to sign up immediately, as Lee will need time to read submitted works before the end of November.

The wonderful importance of a blue pencil session to a new or experienced writer is that you get time with a professional, who will offer feedback, tips, advice, and discuss your writing with you in person. If you’ve ever hired an editor to look over your work, you’ll know how valuable this service is.
