Harry Potter Day returns to Airdrie Public Library on March 11.

While programs are on break here at Airdrie Public Library (APL), we’d like to chat about the literature genre that has captured imaginations for eons.

Fantasy fiction, which often features implausible worlds and supernatural elements, has no basis in science fact or speculation. Nevertheless, it has a long history as a genre.

The Lord of the Rings, Grimm’s Fairy Tales, Aesop’s Fables, Alice in Wonderland, the Chronicles of Narnia and Harry Potter series are examples from a genre that reaches as far back in history as ancient Greece.

Many works of fantasy have been turned into award-winning films, TV series, and board and role-playing computer games.

In today’s world of scientific discovery, works of fantasy such as J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter hold a place in our imaginations, providing escapism from the difficulties of everyday life.

This year, APL is excited for the return of Harry Potter Day on Saturday, March 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

We welcome patrons to drop in for magical adventures in crafts, activities, games, food, and wizardry inspired by the Harry Potter books.

The popularity of Rowling’s young hero endures, providing millions of readers, of all ages, the opportunity to escape into a world of fantastical beasts, wizards, and spell-casting suspense.

For 26 years, countless fans across the world have celebrated Potter and his adventures with book nights, costumed parties, and daytime events, usually offering a mix of games, readings, and plenty of magical fun.

Join us at APL for a few magical hours where you’ll experience a Golden Snitch hunt, Gryffindor Sword making, the Forbidden Forest, wands, Erumpent Horn, Pin the Nose on Voldemort, House sorting, potions, snacks, and much more.

Come dressed as your favourite character no matter your age. Most of all, come for a time of adventure and childhood-wonder celebrating the amazing world found within the pages of the Harry Potter series.
