Library Link: APL looking for its next Writer-in-Residence

Combined with workshops and office hours, the residency offers local writers the chance to liaise with someone who boasts a solid publication history and an established reputation as a professional writer.

Airdrie Public Library is looking to appoints its third Writer in Residence for the month of November.

Following on the heels of last year’s successful Writer-in-Residence program, Airdrie Public Library (APL) is accepting submissions of interest for this year’s residency.

Combined with workshops and office hours, the residency offers local writers the chance to liaise with someone who boasts a solid publication history and an established reputation as a professional writer.

APL’s first Writer-in-Residence program began in the early months of the COVID pandemic. As a result, our first Writer in Residence, critically acclaimed C.B. Forrest, had to quickly adapt to changing public health requirements.

He pulled it off, consulting with and offering help to dozens of aspiring writers in Airdrie.

The next year saw young-adult fiction author Simon Rose host well-attended workshops and packed office hours – all virtual, of course.

This year, we are anticipating the program to be offered in person at the library, for the first time. However, the successful candidate may be required to work remotely, with some or all activities being offered online.

The position requires a four-week engagement in November, and the willingness to support emerging and established writers in any genre or form of writing.

The successful applicant will have a 40-hour commitment for the month and will receive a $3,000 honorarium.

As in previous years, the Writer in Residence will provide one-on-one consultations and offer manuscript readings, blue pencil critiques, and publishing process advice. In addition, they will deliver four public speaking events, including one reading of their work.

The application deadline is Sept. 9 at 5 p.m.

Check out the APL website for more details and how to apply.

Also happening at the library this month, look for our fall programs to start on Tuesday, Sept. 6., with Full STEAM Ahead, Rhymes and Songs, Creative Hands & Minds, Night Owls, Preschool Storytime and much more.
